Victim
Services

Overall, 1 in 10 victims received victim services after their victimization. Victim services include support and services to aid in physical and emotional recovery, protection from future victimizations, guidance through the criminal justice system, and assistance in obtaining restitution.

Crime Against Persons
With Disabilities

2011 to 2015, for each age group measured except persons age 65 or older, the rate of violent victimization against persons with disabilities was at least 2.5 times the unadjusted rate for those without disabilities. Persons ages 12 to 15 had the highest rate of violent victimization among all age groups measured.

Childhood Exposure
to Violence

Children are more likely to be exposed to violence and crime than adults. Almost 1 in 10 American children saw one family member assault another family member, and more than 25 percent had been exposed to family violence during their life (Finkelhor et al., 2009).

Firearm
Violence

70% to 80% of firearm homicides and 90% of nonfatal firearm victimizations were committed with a handgun. Firearm violence accounted for about 70% of all homicides and less than 10% of all nonfatal violent crime. Sixty percent of all serious violent crimes that involved a firearm were reported to police in 2016.

Reporting a
Victimization

Victims may not report a victimization for a variety of reasons, including fear of reprisal or getting the offender in trouble, believing that police would not or could not do anything to help. In 2016, fewer than half (42%) of violent victimizations were reported to police.

Domestic
Violence

There were 1.1 million domestic violence victimizations in 2016. Of these, 54% involved intimate partners (597,740). Domestic violence includes crimes committed by intimate partners (current or former spouses, boyfriends, or girlfriends) and family members.
